The location of the garage at the front of the house makes it an ideal candidate for remodeling. The possibilities that exist for remodeling a garage are virtually endless. Regardless of what you plan to do with your garage, even if you still plan to use it for the intended purposes is to remove all the clutter – that is, the boxes and old tools that you have completely forgotten about.
One of the first ideas when remodeling the garage is that is ideal for a “Man Cave”, but there’s so much more that can be done. Before going there however, you can remodel your garage to make it girly as well. Now, before moving onto the actual ideas for transforming a garage, let’s look at remodeling one in that will be used to actually park or store a vehicle in.
- Clear the Clutter: The first step is to remove all the unwanted stuff you have accumulated. Clearing out a garage after years of collected clutter can make even the most seasoned homeowner shudder. The best approach is to take everything out of the garage before separating the stuff into piles. Determine what you plan on keeping such as tools or children sports equipment, what you need to thrown out (broken furniture or tools) and those you can give away or even sell.
- Make a Plan: The next step is to make a plan on how you plan to better use the space so as to improve how it looks. This means determining how to organize those things that you will continue to keep in the garage, such as bicycles, tools, freezers and gardening supplies. So, keep all gym or sporting equipment together, and frequently used items in an area that it is easily reached. Things that used infrequently ca be placed high up on a shelf out of the way.
- The Floor: More than likely the floor will need some work. Check for cracks and even excess oil spots and take these taken care. In many cases, you may not need to replace the entire concrete flooring, which can be expensive, but just have the cracks or holes filled. In some areas of the floor, you can even put in heavy-duty outdoor mats or carpets to help protect the floor.
- The Walls, Windows and Doors: Fix cracks or holes, as well as apply fresh paint for a new look. This is also the time to install ramps and shelves to help with keeping the garage organized. While lots of garages do not have windows, if yours does, you may want to take the opportunity to give it a new look as well. Molding can brighten up any window, however, for security reason the window should be secure. Finally the doors are normally the biggest attention draw for garages, but in this case, you may just want to wash it or repaint. However, if you are doing a well garage overall, the door will take pride of lace, so bear this in mind.
- Next Get Organizational Supplies: The real remodeling starts with getting the organizational supplies you will use to get things in order. You can build shelves or racks to place boxes or cases on. You need to make sure the shelves do not protrude too far from the walls to cause any obstructions to the vehicles or making moving around unsafe. Luckily, you can buy lots of shelving and storage supplies in places that sell storage supplies.
