Even if you have a deck that you love, some of the evolving designs for decks may just make you want to implement a change. The five design ideas below are just the tip of the proverbial iceberg when it comes to deck design.
- Mixed Material Deck: Gone are the days when decks were made almost entirely of wood. Now different materials can be used together to make decks that are functional and aesthetically pleasing. Wood and concrete are good choices to use together when designing a mixed material deck. The floors can be of wood while the walls are made of concrete.
- Tree Hugging Deck: If you have a tree growing in the space earmarked for a deck, you do not need to remove or cut down the tree. One interesting and environmental way to approach this is to build the deck around the tree. It is a god idea to talk to an expert before doing this as you want to be sure to leave enough space for the tree to continue growing if it is not yet at full maturity.
- Garden Path Deck: Homes with a big back yard and garden are suitable for this type of deck. Instead of just one standard deck, a number of decks can be built at intervals along the garden path. Even if one deck is built, it can consist of varying levels along the length of the garden path. This type of deck doesn’t have to be attached to the house.
- Tiered Deck: Decks with more than one level can be ideal for some settings. If you have a large space and want to break it up, creating a tier deck is a good way to achieve this. Sometimes the lay of the land is best suited to a deck that has more than one level. The upper level may be the ideal location to view the surrounding landscape, while the lower level may be the place to relax and read a book.
- Deck with Built-in Seating: Depending on the size of the deck, having built-in seating may be just what is needed to make it stand out. If you entertain often, built-in seats take away the headache of trying to make everyone comfortable. The only downside to this type of deck design is that the seats are fixed and can be expensive to remove.
With proper planning it is possible to design a deck that will bring you pleasure for years to come. With some creatively you can periodically change up some of the design elements to give your deck a new look.
